Does Mockingbird PDFx include Ghostscript?

No. Mockingbird PDFx does not ship with Ghostscript. You must install Ghostscript separately. Ghostscript 10.06.0 or higher is required. Download Ghostscript

Why does Mockingbird PDFx use Ghostscript?

PDFx is built on Ghostscript, the open-source PDF and PostScript engine that has been under continuous development since 1988. Rather than build our own conversion engine, we built a clean interface around a tool that commercial print workflows have trusted for decades. Ghostscript does the heavy lifting; Mockingbird PDFx handles everything else.

Why are you releasing Mockingbird PDFx as a beta and not a “real” version?

Mockingbird PDFx is new software. Internal testing and private beta releases help, but they can’t replicate the full range of real-world system configurations, PDF structures, and edge cases.

Before we label this v1, we want broader usage in the wild. That gives us real-world feedback and the opportunity to address issues we haven’t encountered yet. It also gives us room to improve and expand features without prematurely locking into a major version change.

If something breaks or behaves unexpectedly, let us know. We want to get this right.

What are the licensing terms?

Mockingbird PDFx is free for personal and commercial use. A copy of the Mockingbird PDFx license agreement is included with your download.

PDFx uses Ghostscript, licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL). Ghostscript is installed separately and is subject to the AGPL.

Do you accept donations?

Mockingbird PDFx is free and will stay that way, but if it’s saved you time or frustration, we’re not going to turn down a donation. Building and maintaining good software takes time, and every donation helps keep the lights on and the development moving. Support the studio.

PDFx runs Ghostscript in SAFER mode by default. This security feature restricts file system access to the specific ICC profile you specify. Your system stays protected while processing untrusted PDFs.
