Your Printer Wants a PDF/X File. Now You Can Give It One.

Many authors get to the end of the production process and hit the same wall. Their PDF looks perfect on screen. The fonts are right, the margins are correct, and the layout is what they designed. Then they upload the file to their printer or distributor and get a rejection notice — or worse, they get back a proof with muddy colors, missing fonts, or transparency errors that weren’t visible in the file they sent.

In almost every case, the standard PDF file format is to blame.

A standard PDF is designed for flexibility — for screen viewing, editing, and sharing — not for predictable press output. Printers need predictability. They need files that eliminate ambiguity before ink ever touches paper.

That need led to the creation of PDF/X, a version of the PDF standard built specifically to eliminate those failure points.

A PDF/X file must meet a defined set of technical requirements before it earns the designation. Fonts must be embedded and subsetted. Transparency must be resolved. Annotations and interactive elements must be removed. Colors must be managed with ICC profiles and output intents that tell the press operator how to reproduce every color in the file.

When you deliver a PDF/X file, you hand the printer a document that answers those technical questions in advance.

Producing a PDF/X file is where things get difficult. The tools that do it well tend to require a subscription, run only on Windows, or assume you already work in print production. If you search for alternatives, you’ll eventually find Ghostscript.

Start with Ghostscript

Ghostscript is the open-source PDF and PostScript engine that commercial print workflows have trusted for decades. It’s free, cross-platform, and can produce a valid PDF/X file.

It’s also a command-line tool built for engineers. Using Ghostscript correctly for PDF/X conversion means assembling a precise set of instructions covering output device flags, color conversion strategy, ICC profile paths, font embedding parameters, and output intent. The settings are — to borrow the word Ghostscript’s own documentation uses — complicated.

Most authors who find Ghostscript either turn back or run into configuration issues. So I built a tool that handles it for you.

Introducing Mockingbird PDFx

Mockingbird PDFx is a standalone PDF/X conversion tool built on top of Ghostscript. Drop in your existing PDF, choose your target standard — PDF/X-1a:2001, PDF/X-1a:2003, or PDF/X-3:2002 — and PDFx handles everything Ghostscript would otherwise require you to configure by hand. PDFx is free, runs on macOS and Windows, and is available today.

Mockingbird PDFx validates ICC profiles against your document’s color mode and embeds them correctly in the output. If you’re printing a black-and-white interior, PDFx can convert color documents to grayscale automatically, in the same workflow, with no additional steps.

You can also run the conversion in reverse. If you have a PDF/X file you need to bring back to a standard PDF — for digital distribution, editing, or repurposing — PDFx handles that too.

For most people, the graphical interface is all you’ll need: drag in your PDF, select your settings, and convert. For publishers running batch jobs or technical users building automated workflows, PDFx includes a command-line interface that supports scripting. Both paths produce the same compliant output.

Install Ghostscript before you convert

Mockingbird PDFx runs on top of Ghostscript, so you’ll need to install Ghostscript separately before PDFx can do anything. The installation is a one-time step, and you can download the latest AGPL version of Ghostscript.

By default, PDFx restricts Ghostscript’s file system access to the specific ICC profile you specify, so your system stays protected while processing files — including files from sources you don’t control.
